Ten Days After

Now been off work for ten days. Today I finished the course of antibiotics. The infection has moved down into my chest and I have a hacking cough.

I have been sleeping downstairs for the past few nights as it is easier to sleep propped up on our sofa bed than in the usual bed (I seem to cough worse when lying flat). Also it gives G a shot at a decent night’s sleep.  Having said that, Stephanie has been waking up most nights and demanding things like toothbrushes, her blanket to be the right way up, “Raa-Raa The Noisy Lion“, etc. so G’s sleep has been somewhat fragmentary (I am told).

Not acheived too much recently, a lot of the last week has been spent aimlessley in bed doing necessary but unexciting sleeping. Monday we had the architects round, more of that in a separate post.

Who knew that today was European Antibiotics Awareness Day?

Looks like my unwillingness to visit doctors may be doing me good, in the long term.

Signed Off

So Wednesdy was a horrible day, full of lying in bed being feverish yet also feeling cold. Inability to sleep was a big issue although I managed to drop off around 1 a.m.

Thursday finds me bloody awful. Wrecked, coughing and with “a bastard behind the eyes”. I do the sensible thing and go to the doctors.  “Bacterial Infection”, they say, probably a mutation of the cold I had in October that refused to go away. That time, both George and I were ill so I ended up doing the childcare rather than sitting around at my ease.

Anyway, I am now in possession of anti-biotics and signed off work until Monday, for the first time ever. Seems a bit much, but I always remember how Jim Henson died so I suppose you have to be careful.

So here I am lying in bed, something that I am not 100% happy with, bizarrely. The worst thing, I find, is listening to the radio for a full day. No matter what the station, you move mechanically through breakfast show, morning show, lunchtime, afternoon, drive-time and then into the depths of “niche” programming, as radio does not try to compete with prime-time TV. I just get reminded of time passing, when I could be doing something more fun.

I have been smitten with the flu for about a week now, necessitating three days off work. In that time, I have also:

  • Completed my Evening Course homework
  • Experimented with this blog
  • Finished re-reading “Red Harvest” by Dashiell Hammett
  • Re-read a reprinted comics collection
  • Watched the excellent “The Devils Backbone” on Youtube, first time I have seen a full length movie there.
  • Watched “Attack the Block” with Dutch sub-titles on Youtube (it was made unavailable to the UK within 12 hours)
  • Slept. Lots.
  • Cleared up a large amount of Stephanie’s wee and poo as the toilet training failed miserably
  • Started uploading a few of my photos to Flickr
  • Bought a new motherboard and RAM for an old PC. My plan is to deliver this to Philip to help with his Photoshop work (or play games on).
  • Added a few things to my Amazon wish list.
  • Reviewed some ideas for the new extension and loft conversion
  • Downloaded Google Sketchup and started to play with it

I still feel rotten. But productive.
